The Alamo – One of the Most Popular Landmarks in Texas
The Alamo is one of the most famous and popular attractions as well as historical landmarks in the state of Texas. The actual building was originally constructed in 1724 to serve as a mission to local Indian tribes. After serving in that capacity for some 70 years, the building eventually became a semi fort to Texan soldiers fighting for independence from Mexico in 1836. Among the defenders of the Alamo were Jim Bowie, William Barrett Travis and Davie Crockett. These heroic men held the Alamo for thirteen days despite horrific odds. Eventually they lost their lives trying to defend the site. Since that time, the Alamo has come to be associated as a symbol of the spirit and bravery of the Lone Star State. The State of Texas owns the Alamo while the Daughters of the Republic of Texas oversee the daily operation of the site. More than 2 million visitors make their way to the historic site each year. Located in downtown San Antonio, across from the River Walk, the Alamo is certainly the most popular attraction in San Antonio. Along with the shrine, the grounds also include a Gift Museum and Long Barrack Museum.
