Going to a movie theater for years was going to a very low tech production.  All that was expected was that a picture would be cast on the screen and from somewhere behind the screen sound would come for one or two speakers.  Now each theater is designed by and audio visual system design team.  They try to get each person in the audience a clear and unobstructed view of the screen.  Sound is provided by a series of speakers that are coordinated with the action on the screen.   The sound is surround so that you hear cars,  planes or dinosaurs as they approach from one side and depart on the other.
