Possible Baritric Surgery Risks
Although Bariatric surgery is an excellent option for many, there are bariatric surgery risks involved in all procedures. The Emory Baritric Center’s team of Physicians warns that ten to 20 percent of patients who have weight-loss operations require follow-up procedures to correct complications, with abdominal hernias being the most common. In addition, following weight loss surgery, more than one-third of patients develop gallstones due to rapid or substantial weight loss. Nearly 30 percent of patients who have weight-loss surgery develop nutritional deficiencies such as anemia, osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease, though these conditions can be avoided with vitamin and mineral supplements. Lastly, since rapid weight loss and nutritional deficiencies can harm a developing fetus, female patients of childbearing age should avoid pregnancy until their weight stabilizes
