In recent years we have seen a steep rise in the number of cases of both high blood pressure and diabetes and this might suggest that there is a link between the two. But does such a link exist and, if so, just how much of a connection is there? A recently published survey looked at 38,000 women and examined their health records going back over a 10 years period. The data was complex to analyze and adjustments had to be made for such things as age, smoking, BMI, alcohol consumption and any family history of diabetes, but the researchers found a clear link between high blood pressure and diabetes with women with high blood pressure being three times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes.
