Botox, anti aging and a healthy detox

Botox has now been used for a number of years for men and women that want to hide signs of aging; but one has to wonder just what it is that this substance is and how it works. In order to appreciate just what this is we need a brief history lesson into its discovery, quite a while ago now. The first research into Botulinum toxin was carried out over five decades ago; originally the purpose of this was to treat neurological disorders.

Then a few decades later in 1989, the Federal Drug Administration in America finally approved its use to treat disorders associated with vision; some of these included patients with excessive, involuntary blinking and for those suffering with crossed eyes plus, on occasion, wrinkles. In the year 2000 it was given the all clear for the of treatment cervical dystonia – this helps people with contractions in the upper back and shoulder and neck area, plus other eye disorders. The strange discovery they made quite by accident was that botox helps to reduce the visible lines between the eyebrows; after this in 2002 the FDA approved its use on the condition that it was a cosmetic procedure.

When Botox is injected into the muscles of the forehead, it blocks nerve impulses which results in the weakening of the muscles that cause frowning; given sufficient treatments, frown lines that the person has lived with for many years will gradually fade. If this procedure is continued, in many instances the lines will soften so much they will seem to disappear; now the same procedure is used on other areas of the face where lines form, generally with age. The injections are a purified and watered down version of the sometimes fatal Botulinum poison; these treatments are only a fraction of the true strength which, in other forms, could make us seriously unwell.

This popularity is due to the fact that we all have wrinkles and lines (increasing with age) when we smile, laugh and make other facial movements which are the result of muscles in the face. The wonderful thing too many people is the treatment can help reduce and often eliminate the signs of aging that have taken years to appear; when these creases become permanent, no kind of skin cream can get rid of them but this treatment can eliminate them temporarily. After being injected into the effected area, botox temporarily paralyzes these muscles so that you can’t make these expressions; because facial movement is reduced, it can give a doll like appearance to the user.

Whilst the face can still provide expressions, they are seriously reduced but this give the effect of someone looking much younger than they really are. However, this cosmetic treatment is still expensive; with injections in the low to very high hundreds of dollars each, it looks to remain expensive for some time to come. It may be a few years yet before we see the result of long term use of botox but that doesn’t seem to concern those people who are using it at this moment.

While the end result may be to the patients liking, I feel the conditions are very restrictive – a lot of these benefits can be gained through a regular and healthy detox diet – the results may take a little longer to appear, but they will be equally, if not longer lasting.
