The Mountain Or Appalachian Dulcimer
Technically, the name of “mountain dulcimer” is a generalization of “Appalachian dulcimer”, which is of particular interest to me, as I used to live mere steps away from the Appalachian Trail. (It was a 15-minute walk/climb to the top of the hill we lived next to.) The Appalachian dulcimer is a plucked string instrument from the zither family, in which the strings do not extend farther than the sounding board or box. It attempting to describe the Appalachian dulcimer, I can only say it sounds slightly like a guitar (more like a mandolin), but far more delicate. It truly evokes a humble existence within the protection of the hills and mountains.
